PAN AMERICAN BOARD
OF OBESITY MEDICINE

The Pan American Board of Obesity Medicine history mixes with the history of SBEMO - The Brazilian Board of Obesity Medicine and EBOM - The European Board of Obesity Medicine - that were established to serve the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians especially in Brazil and Europe. The SBEMO and EBOM are independent entities which organizes and administers certification exams in obesity medicine. Certification as an SBEMO  and EBOM diplomates signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care.

World studies have shown that obesity counseling rates remain low among health care professionals. The main reason is insufficient training in weight management skills and counseling. These data suggest that there is an extensive gap between recommended obesity care and current physician practice.

The Pan American Board of Obesity Medicine (PABOM) was established through the cooperative efforts with The Brazilian Board of Obesity Medicine (SBEMO) and The European Board of Obesity Medicine (EBOM) sharing high standards of excellence for certification in obesity medicine.

Recognition of obesity medicine as a subspecialty certification remains the long-term goal for the PABOM, SBEMO and EBOM. And the growing number of diplomates is an important factor that clearly illustrates the demand for a certification that allows physicians to demonstrate their competency in obesity medicine. ​
